The History of Camp Latieze
Marcel and Leslie Latieze came to Shasta County in the 1950's. While visiting they fell in love with the Manton area, located 45 miles east of Redding. They purchased 163 acres in the rolling foothills between Manton and Mount Lassen. They were always fond of children and had a dream that their property would be used as a place for young people to learn, outside of the confines of a classroom. They started developing the property for that purpose. Leslie Latieze was also enamored with the abundant wildlife in the area and wished to see the area used as a sanctuary for animals and birds.
In 1985, with their passing, the Latieze family generously willed their beautiful property to the Shasta County Board of Education with the intent that it would be used for secondary education. The Board deemed the property "Camp Latieze in memory of their benefactors. Shortly thereafter, the county constructed a modern and comfortable facility complete with lodge, cabins, nature trails, and a swimming pool.
